Valley Hatchery is delighted to present the White Chinese Goslings, a breed with an exceptional blend of beauty, utility, and rich history. Hailing from China, these geese are descendants of the wild Asiatic Swan Goose, renowned for their distinctive raised knob on the beak, a trait developed post-domestication. This knob, notable for its soft and warm texture, sets the White Chinese apart from other geese breeds. The White Chinese Goose is celebrated for its prolific egg-laying capabilities. Historically, they have been recorded to produce 50-60 eggs annually, with some extraordinary individuals laying up to 100 eggs. While such high numbers are rarer nowadays, these geese typically lay between 30-45 white eggs, often extending their laying season into the fall and winter months. The breed’s presence in America dates back to an account by George Washington in 1788, who received a pair of these geese. Their unusual laying season led to them being described humorously by Washington. By the 1850s, the breed was recognized for its ornamental value, resembling a swan in its appearance and being second in size only to the African Goose. Notably talkative, White Chinese geese serve as excellent alert birds, making them ideal for guarding properties against intruders. Their sociable and interactive nature is particularly pronounced when raised from goslings. During the breeding season, the ganders may engage in contests, with the rest of the flock seemingly participating as spectators and vocal supporters. Besides their ornamental and guarding roles, White Chinese geese are adept weeders. Their preference for grass has made them useful in agricultural contexts, such as in cotton fields and orchards, effectively controlling grass and other weeds. Training from a young age can enhance their weeding effectiveness, targeting specific unwanted plants. The White Chinese Goose, a light and graceful bird, is primarily bred for ornamental purposes. They are descendants of the “swan goose” due to their elegant, long necks. Adults are frosted white with orange feet and a prominently raised knob, contributing to their distinctive appearance. However, their mothering abilities are considered poor. They are an active and docile breed, weighing between 10-15 pounds. Despite being light, they are hardy in all climates and classified as a ‘Light’ breed by the American Poultry Association (APA). Their Livestock Conservancy Status is currently listed as ‘Watch’, indicating their special status in the avian world. By choosing White Chinese Goslings from Valley Hatchery, you are not only bringing a bird with a striking appearance to your farm or home but also embracing a breed with a unique combination of history, prolific egg production, and practical utility in weeding and guarding.
