Valley Hatchery is proud to offer Sebastopol Goslings, a breed renowned for its breathtaking beauty and historical significance. Considered by many as the most visually striking of geese, the Sebastopol’s lineage dates back hundreds of years, originating from regions around the Black Sea, including Hungary and the Balkans. Initially known in England as Danubian and in Spain and Italy as Danubio, named after their importations from the lower Danube river area, the Sebastopol name remains shrouded in mystery, possibly derived from the port of Sebastopol. The breed’s defining characteristic is its elegant plumage. While the correct color for a Sebastopol is pure white, young birds may start with a few gray feathers, eventually losing them to become entirely white at about 20 weeks after their final set of feathers develops. Their unique feathers, which do not lay flat, create a visually stunning appearance but offer less insulation than other breeds. This makes them susceptible to cold, as wind can easily fluff their feathers, leading to heat loss. Thus, they require a mud-free environment with at least a bucket of water for washing, and in colder weather, nice draft-free quarters are essential for their wellbeing. Sebastopol Goslings can face fertility challenges and generally have lower than average egg production. While fertility is adequate early in the season, it tends to drop off towards the end of the spring. Artificial insemination has been tried with discouraging results, leading to a reliance on natural mating. Originating in Southeastern Europe, specifically named after the Russian city of Sebastopol, these geese were imported to the USA and are descendants of the European Greylag Goose. Their ornate, soft quilled, curling feathers on their wings, bodies, and tails make them a delight for the eyes. Sebastopols have pure white feathers, orange bills, and feet, and striking blue eyes. Like juveniles of the breed, which may have black or gray feathers, they reach full white feathering by 21 weeks of age. In terms of utility, the Sebastopol serves a dual purpose. It is suited for meat production, ornamental purposes, and weeding. These geese are friendly and calm, making them excellent pets. They weigh between 11-13.5 pounds and are hardy in various climates. Classified as a ‘Medium’ breed by the American Poultry Association (APA), Sebastopols lay about 13-18 white eggs annually, though their mothering abilities are considered poor. This unique breed is currently listed as ‘Threatened’ by the Livestock Conservancy, underlining its special status. By choosing Sebastopol Goslings from Valley Hatchery, you’re not just bringing a bird to your farm or home; you’re embracing a piece of Central European heritage, celebrated for its aesthetic appeal and unique characteristics.
