While they are not recognized by the American Poultry Association in this color, their unique appearance makes them a favorite among poultry enthusiasts. The breed, descended from ancient combatant birds brought to the British Isles by Romans, has a storied past. Initially bred for cockfighting, a practice that became illegal in 1849, the Old English Game birds found a new arena in poultry shows. Here, their physical attributes, rather than combat prowess, are celebrated. This breed is particularly noted for its upright posture and full chest, conveying a bold and larger-than-life presence. Despite their small size, they are robust and active, contributing to the development of various other chicken breeds. It is customary for mature cocks to be dubbed, meaning their comb and wattles are removed. In terms of egg production, the Cuckoo Old English hens lay approximately 120 white eggs annually. While they are not primarily known for their laying capabilities, their tendency to go broody is notable. These birds are also characterized by their strong flying abilities and vocal nature, traits that help them evade predators effectively. Adaptable and resilient, they thrive in diverse environmental conditions. However, it is advisable to house males separately to prevent aggression and fighting.
